Nazca and The Millenary Art of the Lines in the Desert
Nazca is a fascinating city located in the coastal desert of southern Peru, known worldwide for its enigmatic Nazca lines, a set of pre-Hispanic geoglyphs that cover a vast expanse of land. These mysterious figures, some of which can reach up to 200 meters in length, were drawn by the ancient Nazca civilization between the 5th and 8th centuries A.D. and are still the object of study and wonder, as their purpose and how they were created remain unknown.
In addition to the Nazca lines, the city offers other unique experiences for travelers:
The Nazca Lines: The main attraction of the region. These figures represent animals, geometric figures and abstract shapes, and are best appreciated from the air. Tourists can take a panoramic flight from the Nazca aerodrome to see them in their entirety. There are also viewpoints from which some of the larger figures can be observed.
The Chauchilla Cemetery: Only about 30 kilometers from Nazca, this archaeological site is located where you can see the tombs of the ancient Nazca. The site is famous for the well-preserved mummies dating back more than a thousand years, and the remains of textiles and ceramics that give an idea of the lifestyle of this civilization.
Maria Reiche Museum: In honor of the German Maria Reiche, who dedicated much of her life to the study of the lines, this museum houses a collection of documents, photographs and objects related to Reiche’s research and the geoglyphs.
Huacachina Oasis: A few hours drive from Nazca, in Ica, is this beautiful oasis surrounded by sand dunes. It is a perfect place for adventure sports such as sandboarding or buggy rides in the desert.
The Nazca Culture and its aquifers: In the region, travelers can discover the ancient aqueducts of Nazca, built centuries ago to bring water to the city through an ingenious system of subway canals. Some of these aqueducts are still in use today.
The climate in Nazca is hot and dry, with temperatures that can exceed 30°C during the day, while nights are usually cool. It is advisable to visit the site with light clothing, sunscreen and water, especially if you plan to take a desert tour or fly over the lines.
