Humantay Lake. A Turquoise Mirror in the Peruvian Andes
Located more than 4,200 meters above sea level, the Humantay Lake is one of Peru’s most impressive natural jewels. Surrounded by majestic mountains and glaciers, this turquoise lake is a perfect destination for nature lovers, photography and hiking. What to do in the Humantay Lake?
Trekking to the lake
The hike begins in the community of Soraypampa and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of ascent. It is a moderate to challenging challenge due to the altitude, but the effort is worth it when you reach the impressive lake.
Photography and connection with nature
The beauty of the lake and the surrounding snow-capped mountains create a spectacular landscape. It is an ideal place to capture unique photos and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.
Offering to the Pachamama
Many visitors perform small offering ceremonies to Pachamama (Mother Earth) as a symbol of gratitude and respect for nature, following the Andean tradition.
Sighting of flora and fauna
During the tour, it is common to see llamas and alpacas grazing in the valleys, as well as a great variety of Andean flora, including the iconic ichu (Andean tall grass).

- Prior acclimatization: Due to the altitude, it is advisable to spend at least a couple of days in Cusco before the excursion.
- Wear appropriate clothing: The weather can change quickly, so it is recommended to wear thermal, waterproof clothing and trekking shoes.
- Early departures: Most tours depart between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. from Cusco, to arrive at the lake in the morning and avoid crowds.
- Hydration and snacks: Bring water, coca leaves or muña candies to combat altitude sickness, as well as energy snacks.
How to get to Humantay Lake.
- From Cusco, take transportation to Soraypampa (approximately 3 hours of travel).
- From Soraypampa, the 1.5 to 2 hour hike begins. It is also
- possible to rent horses to facilitate the ascent.
- After enjoying the scenery, you return the same way.
