What to do in La Paz?
1. Tour the historic center and Plaza Murillo
Visit Plaza Murillo, where the Government Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Legislative Assembly are located. It is an ideal place to learn about Bolivia’s political history.
2.Explore the Witches’ Market
A traditional market where amulets, medicinal herbs and ritual objects used in the Andean cosmovision are sold. You can also find unique handicrafts and souvenirs.
3. Go up the cable car
The Mi Teleférico is the highest cable transport system in the world and offers spectacular views of the city and its surroundings. It is an inexpensive and exciting way to tour La Paz.
4.Visit the Valley of the Moon
Just 10 km from downtown, this surreal landscape of rock formations eroded by wind and rain looks like something out of another planet. It’s ideal for a short hike and breathtaking photographs.
5.Adventure on the Death Road
About 2 hours from La Paz, this archaeological site is one of the most important in Bolivia and shows the vestiges of the ancient Tiwanaku civilization, precursor of the Inca Empire.
6.Visit Tiwanaku
- Previous acclimatization: The altitude can affect some visitors, so it is recommended to spend a few days in Cusco before trekking.
- Wear appropriate clothing: The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so it is recommended to wear thermal clothing, waterproof and trekking shoes.
- Early departures: Most tours leave Cusco in the early morning to reach the mountain at dawn and avoid crowds.
- Hydration and snacks: Bring enough water and some energy snacks for the trek.
7.Explore the Rodriguez Market and Bolivian gastronomy
Taste traditional dishes such as chicken sajta, salteña (juicy empanada) and api con pastel in this market full of flavors and colors.
Tips for visiting La Paz
- Acclimatization: Due to the altitude, it is advisable to take it easy the first few days, drink mate de coca and avoid intense physical exertion.
- Adequate clothing: The weather can vary a lot in a single day, so it is good to bring warm clothes and something light.
- Safety and transportation: Use safe transportation such as official cabs or the cable car. Avoid walking alone in uncrowded areas at night.
- Money exchange: It is best to change money in exchange houses or ATMs in the center.
How to get to La Paz?
- By air. El Alto International Airport (4,061 m a.s.l.) receives national and international flights.
- By land. There are bus connections from cities such as Cusco (Peru), Uyuni, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
