The Inca Trail: Route to Machu Picchu

The Inca Trail is the most famous route to Machu Picchu. This ancestral trail follows in the footsteps of the Incas and traverses landscapes of mountains, jungle and archaeological ruins before culminating at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) with the first view of the citadel.

Route options:

  • Classic Inca Trail (4 days / 3 nights):
    The most popular route, covering approximately 42 km. It includes challenging passes such as the Abra de Warmiwañusca ( 4,215 meters altitude).
    It passes through archaeological sites such as Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarcabefore reaching Machu Picchu.
  • Short Inca Trail (2 days / 1 night):
    A shorter alternative, ideal for those who have less time. It starts at Km 104 and passes through the site of Wiñay Wayna before reaching Machu Picchu.
  • Train Option to Machupicchu:
    Take the comfortable train alternative, ideal for those who have less time and avoid the hike. Take the train for 90 minutes approx. from Ollantaytambo town to Aguas Calientes town and spend the night at the Hotel and maybe enjoy the natural hot springs and day after we will get the opportunity to get up to Machupicchu to appreciate one of the seven wonders of the world.

Trekking Characteristics:

  • Nature and scenery: Trekkers cross Andean landscapes, high jungle and rivers, with spectacular views.
  • Physical effort: The trek requires good physical condition, especially on the classic route.
  • Sun Gate (Inti Punku): The highlight of the route, from where trekkers get their first glimpse of Machu Picchu at sunrise.

Tips for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu

  • Advance reservations: Places on the Inca Trail are limited and fill up quickly. It is recommended to book at least 6 months in advance.
  • Physical condition: It is important to be in good physical condition and acclimatize to the altitude in Cusco before starting the trek.
  • What to bring:
  • Adequate clothing for the changing weather.
  • Comfortable trekking boots.
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle.


Guides and agencies:
It is mandatory to do the Inca Trail with an authorized agency and expert guides, who take care of the logistics and explain the archaeological sites along the route.

Route options:

  • Reaching Machu Picchu after walking the Inca Trail is not only a physical achievement, but a spiritual experience. The thrill of walking the historic trails and seeing the citadel for the first time at sunrise from the Sun Gate is incomparable.

    Best Time to Visit

    • Dry season (May to October): Ideal for trekking, with clear skies and less chance of rain.
    • Rainy season (November to April): Although the landscape is greener, the trails can be slippery. Note: The Inca Trail closes in February for maintenance.
